The way food is packaged can have a significant impact on consumers' recognition of a product and building their trust to make a purchase. In this regard, bread packaging attracts the attention of experts and consumers due to the high sensitivity of health and hygiene issues. The present study aims to examine 48 available samples of bread packaging based on the Shannon and Weaver communication model to analyze its three core principles: technical, semantic, and effectiveness-related communication issues.
This research was conducted using library studies, note-taking, and interviews with 40 accessible male and female participants aged 7 to 79. The packaging was evaluated through image analysis. The research question of the current study is to what extent the technical, semantic, and effectiveness issues outlined in the Shannon and Weaver model have been implemented in Iranian bread packaging.
The results indicate that all three mentioned principles are present at a satisfactory level in the studied packaging of at least one of the brands. Furthermore, colorless plastic packaging demonstrated the highest degree of effectiveness because it allows consumers to quickly identify the product's type and quality, which will likely influence manufacturers' choices of packaging types. Additionally, despite knowing other languages, the majority of the participants in this study paid attention to the Persian text on the packaging to find out the product name and receive information, which further highlights the necessity for manufacturers to use the Persian language and legible fonts.
